The Learning Curve

New tricks for an old dog.

Weird ideas gone viral

First, Seth tells us about The Galapagos Post Office, just in case you’re in need of new and fascinating trivia.

Now I learn the identity of the Poe Toaster.

The mystery of the “Poe Toaster” was the identity and purpose of the individual who, for decades, repeatedly placed three roses and a bottle of cognac at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe.  Now we know it was Sam Porpora, a 92-year-old man who championed preserving Poe’s grave site as a historical monument.

Porpora explained, “It was a promotional idea. We made it up, never dreaming it would go worldwide.”

It was a promotional idea.

Go figure.  I guess it worked.
