The Learning Curve

New tricks for an old dog.

Sure, blame the devil

According to CNN, “Two mentally disabled women were strapped with explosives Friday and sent into busy Baghdad markets, where they were blown up by remote control from another location.”

“By targeting innocent Iraqis they show their true demonic character,” said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman for the Multi-National Division-Baghdad.

See the CNN article.

Now, I enjoy a figure of speech as much as the next guy, but to describe the utter ruthlessness of terrorists in terms of their “true demonic character,” worries me. Was this simply a colorful turn of phrase, or does it reflect a more basic belief system that characterizes our opponents as being intrinsically evil.

A fish stinks from the head down, as they say, and our Commander in Chief has been prone to describe his world-view in terms of good and evil, so is Lt. Col. Steve Stover’s statement a result of national policy set at the highest levels?

Can a sophisticated country like the U.S. really afford to conduct its international policy based upon beliefs plucked from the Dark Ages?
