The Learning Curve

New tricks for an old dog.

News of the absurd

Cultural insanity reached a new low-water mark when Dunkin’ Donuts bowed to pressure from loudmouth idiots Fox News and others, complaining that the silk scarf worn by Rachael Ray in a TV ad vaguely reminded some people of the printed fabric used for a headdress worn by Arab men.

Boston Globe: Dunkin’ Donuts yanks Rachael Ray ad

Dunkin’ Donuts reluctantly pulled the ad, calculating that doing so was easier and cheaper than dealing with the screaming lunatics, but the Arab men who wrap black-and-white paisley decorated silk scarfs around their heads have not yet been specifically identified.

The episode does present an interesting question. What is the best way to deal with the threatening images people imagine they see in Rorschach inkblot tests?

The Rorschach test “has been employed in diagnosing underlying thought disorder and differentiating psychotic from nonpsychotic thinking in cases where the patient is reluctant to openly admit to psychotic thinking.

This is a good illustration.

Or, ask any high school student.  Algebra is an Arab terrorist plot to infiltrate and undermine the pure simplicity of our culture.

File under bogeyman.
