The Learning Curve

New tricks for an old dog.

Strange marketing ideas

There is this huge uncut emerald that weighs about 850 pounds, and people are fighting over it.

CNN: 850-pound emerald at center of dispute.

It is no surprise that people are fighting over this stone or that the owners, whoever they may be, wish to sell it for as much as they can get for it. But according to CNN, “At one point, the emerald was listed for sale on eBay for a ‘buy it now‘ price of $75 million,” and that is surprising. In fact, it is downright strange.

Just because something is easy and fairly inexpensive to do, like listing a raw emerald for $75 million on eBay, it is not good enough reason to actually do it. One of the strong points of eBay is the ability to connect with buyers who would otherwise be nearly impossible to identify.

The people in the jewelry business who have the knowledge and who are in a position to have a use for 180,000 carats of uncut emerald can be found in the New York City phone book.
