Collecting debts of the dead

You’re Dead? That Won’t Stop the Debt Collector

That’s the headline for a story in today’s New York Times about debt collectors who contact surviving family members seeking payment on unpaid bills left when the dearly departed.  Generally the family has no legal obligation to pay these debts, but they frequently do so anyway.  For some it is an issue of family honor and fulfilling the deceased’s last wishes.  “Uncle Joe always paid all this bills, and he’ll rest easier if we take care of this.”  Others simply don’t know what they are or are not legally obligated to pay.

File this under: It doesn’t hurt to ask.
